Kotara was laid out as a garden suburb and grew quickly after 1947. Long before that, in the 1870s, the Australasia Coal Company ran a mine and a private railway in the valley near today's Tickhole Tunnel, and the company was wound up in 1879.
Westfield Kotara, on Northcott Drive, was once called Garden City and later Kotara Fair, and the Kotara Home Centre across the road has large-format stores and food outlets, which makes the suburb one of Newcastle's biggest retail areas. Kotara also has its own station on the train line.
Blackbutt Reserve is a short drive away, entered from Carnley Avenue, where the reserve has accessible toilets, picnic shelters and a playground, with paved paths and a boardwalk past the wildlife exhibits. The suburb is split between two councils, the City of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, so which council services apply depends on your street.
Kotara South Public School and St James Primary are both here.

Questions to ask any NDIS provider in Kotara
Ask whether they are registered, who will actually turn up, and what happens if you want to change. The registered and unregistered NDIS providers article sets out why the first question matters. When you are ready, the NDIS Newcastle page and our getting started page are the next steps.
