Community Participation in full
Getting out of the house is often the hardest part of the week, and the most important. Community participation NDIS support means a support worker comes with you, so the shops, the beach or the footy are within reach again. Our base is in Wallsend, we are NDIS registered, and we go out with people across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
What is community participation NDIS funding for?
On a plan, this support is called "Assistance with social and community participation". It sits in core supports, and the NDIS says it is there for people who want to spend more time in their local community and get involved in group or social activities.
In practice, that means you pick the outing and your support worker helps with whatever makes it hard: planning, getting there, paying at the counter, finding a seat, the noise, or just having someone beside you.
Community access NDIS: what an outing can look like
Most people have one or two regular outings a week, plus the occasional one-off. Some favourites with the people we support:
- the weekly shop at Charlestown Square or Westfield Kotara
- a coffee and a walk along the Warners Bay foreshore
- Bathers Way at Merewether, or a swim at the ocean baths
- the library, a craft group or a Men's Shed
- church on Sunday, or the local footy on a Saturday
- a GP or hospital appointment in town
An afternoon in Charlestown
A participant in Elermore Vale has a three-hour shift every Wednesday. Her support worker meets her at home at noon. They catch the bus to Charlestown Square, where she does her own banking and picks up a script, and the worker helps carry the bags and keeps an eye on the time. Lunch is at a cafe she chose months ago. On the way home they plan next week's outing: the markets, if the weather holds.
Who pays for what on an outing
NDIS funding can't be spent on day-to-day living costs. Your own coffee, lunch, ticket or entry fee is yours to pay, the same as for anyone else. Your plan pays for the support worker's time.
We agree how activity costs work before the first outing, including the support worker's own entry and any travel in their car, and we write it into your service agreement. No surprises on the day.
The same people beside you
Going out with someone works best when you know them. Your outings are shared between two or three regular support workers, kept the same wherever possible. They learn which seat you like on the bus and which shops get too busy after 11am. Ask for a change at any time, and you won't be asked why.
All of them hold a current NDIS Worker Screening Check, plus first aid and CPR certificates.
How it sits in your plan, and who can use us
Assistance with social and community participation is core funding, so it is flexible across your core supports budget. If you want to build the skills to do more of this on your own, that is a separate, capacity building category. Our page on increased social and community participation explains the difference.
Plans managed by the NDIA, by a plan manager, or self-managed are all fine with us. Not sure what being registered changes? Read registered vs unregistered NDIS providers.
What community participation costs
Our prices follow the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27 and never go above the price limits. You get a written quote and a service agreement before anything starts.
Your first outing
We reply within 2 business days, then meet you at home or somewhere local for a coffee within about a week. First outings usually happen 2 to 3 weeks after first contact. We often start close to home, with somewhere you already know, such as the shops around Charlestown.
Families can read how starting with us works. Coordinators can send details through the referrals page.
