NWC: close the demo and go back to Newcastle Web Co

Demo by Newcastle Web Co. This is a demo design and not a real business. Every design is one of one: when a business picks it, no one else gets it.

Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, voice control, magnification, or someone helping from the next chair.

  • Registered NDIS provider Reg. 4050000000 (demo)

What we built it to

This site is built to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. In Australia, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 covers information and services delivered online, and the Australian Human Rights Commission points to WCAG as the standard to meet.

Accessibility is part of how the pages are written and coded, not a widget added on top. There is no accessibility toolbar or overlay. Your browser and device settings for text size, contrast and reduced motion all work here.

What that means in practice

  • Body text is at least 18px, in Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, a typeface designed for low-vision readers. Small notes and captions are 14 to 16px.
  • Text and background colours meet AA contrast, and most meet AAA.
  • Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline, and starts with a "Skip to main content" link.
  • The header stays at the top as you scroll, and the page always leaves room for it, so it never covers what you're focused on.
  • Buttons and links are large enough to tap: at least 24 by 24 pixels, and most are 48 or more.
  • Pages still work at 200% zoom, and reflow to a single column at 400%.
  • Form fields have labels above them, errors are written out in words beside the field, and a summary at the top links to each one.
  • If you start one form and move to another, your name and phone carry across so you don't type them twice.
  • Anything that moves can be stopped with the "Pause animations" button at the top of every page, and your choice is remembered. Motion is off from the start if your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Help to reach us (phone, interpreter, the National Relay Service and complaints) is in the same place, in the same order, on every page.
  • Every support page can be read two ways: in plain words, or as quick facts. There's also an Easy Read page.
  • Support pages and blog posts work with your browser's reading mode (Reader View in Firefox, Reader in Safari, Reading mode in Chrome, Immersive Reader in Edge). It shows just the words, at the size and colours you choose, and most can read the page aloud.

How it was checked

Our launch checklist tests every page type with a keyboard only, with the NVDA screen reader in Chrome, at 200% zoom and at 320 pixels wide, with reduced motion on, and with JavaScript switched off. Automated checks (Lighthouse) run as well, but they only find some problems, so they come second. On this demo, the Lighthouse checks (accessibility 100 on every page type), the form checks, a scripted keyboard focus check and a 320 pixel reflow check are done. The hands-on NVDA pass is still to do, and this line will say so until it is.

Known issues

  • Google Maps, on the contact page, opens on Google's own site, which we don't control. The address is also written on the page.
  • Social media links go to platforms whose accessibility we don't control.
